Types of cameras. What camera to buy? [photography nugget]

The holidays are fast approaching.. a couple of my friends and officemates are planning to buy their own cameras and are asking suggestions on what to choose. As an answer, I write this blog post for everyone who will be receiving their 13th to 16th month pays this December and will be buying a photographic tool for themselves... ~ Let's start ~

Choosing a camera to buy can sometimes be frustrating given the many options in the current market (types, brand, models, features, etc.). So before jumping into the DSLR bandwagon, let's know more about the different types of cameras that are widely popular and available today so that you can decide what type of camera will best fit you. :)

I'd like to give four categories of cameras and describe them, including their pros and cons based from my personal experience. The categories are:

1. Compact point-and-shoot cameras

2. Bridge/superzoom cameras

3. Mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras

4. DSLRs

GF1. The newest & coolest guy on my computer desk.

Finally got my hands on a Panasonic GF1! A micro four-thirds mirrorless system camera! (^'___'^)

Bought it just this morning at Greenhills Shopsville from a small kiosk who sells printers and inks. Who would have thought that they were selling this gem at a price the same as a retail Lumix 20mm 1.7 pancake lens. It's like I got the camera for free (since it was the lens that I'm really after). You probably won't see a deal like this one. This product is already phased out since last year. GF1 is a 2009 model. GF5 is the latest of the GF series, I think.

Brand new, one year warranty, price of a 20mm 1.7 pancake! Good buy! :D
